HOCKEY.

The second series of matches in (he Horowhenua Association took place on AA'ednesday, when all the games were closely contested, and the competition promises to be a close one all through, FOXTON (1) v.’OTAKI (1). This match was played in Levin, and proved an even contest, and the .score of one all was a good indication of the merits of the teams. Both -sides showed some nice (lashes of combined play, but there was a good deal of penalising for bugaches of the rules. Eoxion led off by attacking strongly, and soon had Otaki busy keeping the hall out (if their circle. Play moved rapidly ii]) and down the field, and getting h;u*k to Otaki ground, exciting play followed until Foxton finally reached the net and drew first blood. After this reverse, Otaki livened up and made strenuous efforts to even up the score, and at length succeeded, after a bout of exciting play. In the second halt Foxton came dangerously near the not, two or three likely scores being narrowly missed. Towards the latter part of the game Otaki invaded, and only the saving' tactics of the Foxton full hack kept them out. 1

Among the Eoxtoniles was a veteran Alanawaki rep. (R. AlcAfurray), who has been playing hockey for over 20, yqars, and is still spry in the circle.

Otaki again showed a disposition to dispute the decisions of the referee, a most unfortunate weakness in such an excellent combination, and one which should be sternly suppressed by their skipper.

Mr Gilbert Noble controlled the game with strict impartiality. The other games played resulted as* follows: —Excelsior (3) V To Horo (2). Y.AI.C.A, (3) v. R.S.A. (2). Shannon a bye. . .
