One of the most remarkable erim,inal prosecutions in the annals of the Supreme Court of the Dominion was advanced another stage at Wellington yes!(>rday, when the principal witness for the Crown, Miss Gladys Balehelor, a ‘2l-year-old girl upon whom it is alleged an illeg.nl operation was performed, was committed to prison for nine months Cor treating the court with contempt by refusing to answer questions addressed to her by the prosecuting counsel. The prisoners in the dock —James Reynolds Hayne, of Dunedin, a well-known chemist, and Norman Ncylon- —-stood indicted, for the fourth time, on a charge that they unlawfully used an instrument, to procure a miscarriage.
The case was adjourned until the next 'sidings of the Supreme Court, on the application of the Crown Prosecutor.
