AMTTHAS’ GREAT WIN. Referring' to the locally-owned Amythas’ great win at the Royal meeting held at Ricearton last Saturday, a southern exchange -says:— Few races, that have ever been decided at Ricearton have commanded so much interest as did the weight-for-age Marlborough Stakes. Arrowsmith, Karo, and Amythas all looked trained to an hour, but Right and Left, wearing hind boots, did not hit out in his prcliminai’y at all freely. When the barrier lifted Right and; Left was on the move, and piling on the pace as if it was only a flutter he had opened up a gap of cjuite ten lengths at the end of two furlongs. This ho maintained all along the back, and even when (he live furlongs had been covered it looked as if the others were up against an almost impossible task. Turning into (he home straight (he latter started to come back to his field, and with heads fairly in line for the post. Arrowsmith set sail after him, closely attended by Amythas. A furlong from the post Right and Left was in trouble. There Amythas shot past both him and Arrowsmith, winning handsomely from the English-bred horse by two lengths. As a demonstration of the speed clapped on by Right and Left, it need only be mentioned that the first furlong was cast behind in 12 2-ssec., the second in 24 2-sscc., the third in Btisec., and the half-mile in 4(i 2-ssec.
If was n remarkable, performance on the pari of Amythas, and one Unit stamps him as amongst the best three-year-olds seen out at Riccarton for many a year. When it came to business h<e outpaced Arruwsmilh and was galloping away from him when the post was reached. The race undoubtedly settled any question as to the merits of the pair. Karo had. to be hunted alone; all through to keep within striking distance of Arrowsmith, and this left her well beaten a lon# way from home. If ever a horse had a chance of effectiug a surprise it was Right and Left. He showed great brilliancy for six furlongs, but was slopping almost to a walk as . the post was reached. After the race the owner, Mr 1A S. Kaslon, and rider, were complimented bv the Prince.
