HORRORS OF FAMINE.
STRICKEN LANDS OF EUROPE.
Distressing stories of (he privations being suffered by the people of the famine-stricken regions of Central and Eastern Europe, and especially young children and infants, were related by speakers at a public meeting held in Auckland on Thursday of last week. The meeting, which had been convened by the Mayor, Mr -I. IT. Gnnson. was for the purpose of considering the obligation of citizens to raise funds towards the relief of the starving children of .Vienna. The .movement originated in Great Britain', and lias been endorsed by leading citizens
of (lie Empire. The British Government have offered to give a £ for £ subsidy on any moneys raised on behalf, of the Mricken children.
After some discussion, in which all sections of the community spoke in support of opening a fund, the following motion was carried unanimously: “That (ids meeting is of the opinion that New Zealand should respond to the appeal made by the A rclibishop of Canterbury, Lord Haig, Lord Cur/,on, and others, for help in saving Hie children in the fauiine-strieken lands of Central Europe. The motion also requested Hie Mayor to obtain approval of (he .Minister for Internal Affairs to the constitution of a fund.
In connection with the above, the Mayor (Mr John Chrystall) <!d, and asked that a subscription list be opened at this ollice, to which request we have pleasure in acceding, and all donations will be acknowledged as received.
