THE HEMP INDUSTRY.

MARCH GRADING RETURNS. The total quantity of hemp, tow > and stripper slips graded at the various ports in the Dominion during the month of March was as follows; Hemp. —The total number of hales graded was 11,130, as compared with 13,357 for the corresponding period of last year, a decrease of 2,227 bales. For the 12 months ended 31st March, 1920, the number of bales graded was 90,808, as compared with 130,773 for (he previous 12 months, a decrease of 45,905 bales. Tow. —During the month 2,490 hales were graded, as compared with 2,831 for the corresponding period of last year, a decrease of 341 hales. For the 12 months ended 31st March, 1920, the number of bales graded Mas 19,058, as compared with 21,553 for the previous 12 months, a decrease of 1,895 bales. Stripper Slips. —During the month 120 bales ■were graded, as compared willt nil for the same month last vear. For the 12 mouths ended 31st March, 1920, (he number of bales graded - was 132, as compared with 599 for the previous 12 months, a decrease of 407 bales. The following table shows the number of bales in the various grades at each port in the Dominion:

Four bales at Foxton, tour at Blenheim, and 111 at Picton were graded fine, .fen bales at Auckland, 330 at Foxton, and 20 at Wellington were rejected. The number of bales graded at each port was as follows; Auckland 2,008, Foxton 3,101, Wellington 4,705, Napier 158, Blenheim 03, PiHon 130, Blurt' 077, Dunedin 00. The number of bales in each grade throughout the Dominion was as under, the total for the corresponding month of last year being given in parentheses : —Fine 110 (lol), good fair 1,828 (1,000), high fair 0,105 (0,243), common 230 (227), rejected 178 (18), condemned nil (1); total, 11,130 (13,357).
