COUNCIL MOVES IX MATTER. At the special meeting of the Borough Council on Tuesday night the .Mayor said he thought the .Council ought lo consider the question of (lie appointment' of a night watchman. He thought the Council should subsidise subscriptions of the business people. If it was possible to avert, one lire only the money would lie well spent. Cr. Coley aslant the Mayor lo tell him of one place where the Council pays for a night watchman. If. the people in Alain Street wanted a night watchman, let them pay for it. Cr. Me Murray considered the Council should contribute towards the cost of a watchman. He suggested ten shillings per week. The Mayor: 1 think £1 a week. The Council was always a loser whenever there was a tire, in gas, etc. Cr. Coley and others objected lo ,tl per week’. It was altogether too much. i Cr. Ale Murray said the Council had two valuable buildings (Town Ha!! and Council Chambers), and Mionld certainly coniribnte. Cr. Coley said he was quite prepared lo support the Council paying it-, -proper share, Cr. Bryant considered live shillings pe.r week would he sullieieut. it was decided to notify the Retailers’ Association (hat the Council would he prepared to pay leu shillings per week for three months towards the cost of a night watchman, to lie on duty in the brick area; the Retailers’ Association to employ the man and collect the balance required from properly owners.
