PALMERSTON ALERT!

A SUBURBAN AREA. The creation of suburban ureas round Palmerston North for the purpose of securing cheap transit on the railways was a question introduced at the Retailers’ Association meeting held there last week. It was pointed out that other large towns could secure for residents comparatively short distances away cheaper fares on the suburban railway principle. They might take in such places as Feilding (loud laughter). Vfoodville, Dannevirke, Buxton, Levin, and Ashhnrst. It would be of benefit to the town, as with the cheaper fares, people from these places would he induced to visit there more frequently, and incidentally spend money there, and >o add

to its prosperity. it was mentioned by the chairman (Mr U. 11. Collinson} that I lie District Traffic Manager from Wanganui was meeting I lie Ctiainher of Commerce on Monday to discuss demurrage charges and other mat term and it might be of advantage to get into touch with him on the matter. Mr Martin thought the suggestion a good one, and moved that the chairman with Messrs O'Callaghan, Farrows and Marlin wan on I lie Traffic Manager as a deputation at, the meeting on Monday, and pul the 'tiggestion before him. Mr Bennett, in seconding the motion, said the matter was one which intimately concerned (he Chamber - ; f Commerce, and they should seek !heir backing in the matter. W The motion was carried.

' Tlie move by the Palmerston business people is indeed very “slim,” end it believes Foxton to watch out. It looks very much like piracy, and already the local public, is greatly, inconvenienced by the late Saturday nip-lit and early Monday morning train service ostensibly for the purpose of conveying 1 vvcck-cndeis to the local seaside, but in reality to attract trade to Palmerston. Palmerston retailers arc to be commended for their enterprise and self-interest, but Foxton’s public convenience - must not be sacrificed lo Grab-all and Co.
