UNEMPLOYED WORKERS’ BILL.
The State Labour Government of Queensland has within the past few years been responsible for several novel experiments in legislation. The latest snd one of the most interesting is a Bill dealing with the'problem of unemployment. This Bill provides for the establishment of a council, which,will have as its chief duties the work of inquiry into the causes of unemployment and report thereon to the Government: devising ifieaus for reducing or eliminating unemployment; inquiry into the working of the labour exchange, and suggestions for impiroveuients
lo that system. Il provides iilso lor (he establishment of an insurance fund, against which will be charged the sustenance paid by the Government to unemployed workers. Provision is made to enable the Government lo start relief works in any district in which unemployment exists, that unemployment may be reduced and distress alleviated. Another feature is that unemployed workers will be entitled to claim assistance on certain grounds set out in the Bill. Unemployed insurance will be paid by employers at the rate of £2 for each employee. The Bill as a-whole is of very great interest.
