RIVER PICNIC.

The picnic under the auspices of the Methodist Sunday school was a groat success on Anniversary Day. The weal her was ideal for the outing, and a large party of children, comprising the -Methodist Sunday school, in charge of the Rev. Harding and Mr Huntley (superintendent), Salvation Army Sunday school, in charge of Captain and Airs Coffin, and the Church of England Orphanage children, from Palmerston North, in the care-of Miss Spencely (matron). A fair muster of parents and friends accompanied the children. The punts left the wharf soon after 10 a.m., landing at the top of Long’Reach, on the site of the old “Crown” mill, about midday. The picnic party was enlivened by the notes of a trumpet, much to the enjoyment the bovine and equine inhabitants along the river hanks. Shortly after arrival lea was made, and all were assembled to the shrill notes of the cookhouse call, and justice was done to the good things provided. After lunch parties set off to the hush, returning with' ferns and greenery. ■ Paddling on the bench, games organised by Captain Collin, and snap-shots of celebrities r wcre falcon by lady photographers of .the parly. After tea the happy folks embarked on the return I rip, a most enjoyable journey. .In Jit; after passing Whimkiiio bridge the waves reminded one of the Bay of Biscay, hut they soon calmed down. Cheers were called for “Our Skipper,” Mr Signal, “the children’s friend,” who so kindly took l.hcm out. Foxton was reached about six pan., and the tired hut very ■ happy party made for their homes, thoroughly satisfied with the outing. Tlhose responsible for the picnic desire io thank all who assisted in making the outing such a success.
