Manawatu Herald TUESDAY, JANUARY 20, 1919. DIVINE DEMOCRACY.
AN .address was delivered at Wanganui lasi week by an Indian visitor, Mr (A Jinara.jadasa, M.A., on “Ihe day oi' Divine Democracy.” The speaker is reported to he llnenl and endured. 'Me said in America there was democracy in name, but what amounted to a monarchy in i'aet, whereas, in spile oi: the different conditions in Britain, democratic institutions were more fully recognised in. the latter country. In the light of Russian events, no one would dream of democracy there; slid no one could slay ils coming, although in a different way. Strange things were happening, and the (.nitlook was not. bright, for with the democratic regime had come, not only shorlcr hours and more pay, but also Ihe disappearance of some of the liner courtesies of life. A higher type of culture could never be reached so Jung as the world’s dreamers I bought of men as mere bodies, and not as sohls. So long as [hey thought, in terms of the body they would have a ma'lerialisin which would increase until there existed a tyranny worse than ever existed before. The Jirst step towards true democracy was a full recognition of every man as an immortal son], and a recognition of nothing of religion, racial, caste, or class distinction, which'only raised harriers between men and their fellow men,.
