SOLDIER SETTLERS’ HARDSHIP.
Returned soldiers who have taken up land at the back of Shannon waited upon tlfe Horowhenua County Council last Saturday, and asked for road improvement. There were ruts in which horses could be buried, while accidents were prevalent. It was absolutely unsafe to drive women over the road, and at present only saddlers and coachbuilders benefited Cr Broadhelt said he knew the road to he a lumpy one, and should he repaired. The engineer said the only- difficulty was to get labour, and if any of the young men would help he would see they were paid. The surfaceman" was unable to cope with the road. ; Two of the deputation volunteei’ed to assist in the work, and it was agreed to put it in hand as soon as possible. It was pointed out that member • of the deputation had no access v : their property unless through , private land. Some councillors considered this a disgraceful, state of affairs, and considered the Government should assist in the matter. The deputation agreed to write to Messrs Field and Newman, M’.s.Pi, on the matter, and ask them to do their best to get the Government to put in a road.
