THE HEMP INDUSTRY.
DECEMBER GRADING RETURNS. The following is a return showing the quantities of hemp, tow, and stripper-slips graded at the ports of the Dominion during the month of December*, 1919: — ' Hemp.—The total number of bales graded was 10,538, as compared with .11,4(50 for the corresponding period last year,'a decrease of 928 hales. For the twelve months ended 3!-t December, 1919, the number of hales graded was 99,047* as compared with 149,235 for the previous twelve months, a decrease of 49.588 hales.
Tow. —During the month, 2,414 hales were graded, as compared with 1,187 for the same month last year, an increase of 1,227 bales. For the 12 mouths ended 31st December, .1.910, the number of bales graded was 19,783, as compared with 25,49(5 for the previous tw-rt’e months, a, decrease of 5,713 bales. Stripper-Slips. — Nil, Corresponding month last year, nil. For twelve months ended 31 st December, 1919, the number of hales graded was twelve, as compared with 1,397 for the previous twelve months, a decrease of 1,295 bales.
