HORTICULTURAL SOCIETY.

A well-alionded Committee meeting of the above, presided over by Air \V. E. Barber, was held on Thursday evening. Correspondence was read from the Otaki Society re” breakages of vases in transit. It Wiis decided lo purchase* vases to replace those broken, and to charge same to the Otaki Society. The Secretary submitted a statement of receipts and expenditure in connection with the Summer Show, which disclosed a debit of £1 15s Kid, exclusive of cost of schedules leftover from last year. The lota! receipts were £37 15s (id, and the expenditure £39 11s 4d. It was explained that extra had to be paid for ball hire, and that there was no sweets stall this year, which always showed a profit. Accounts were passed for payment. After some discussion il was decided to abandon the Autumn Show next year, leaving only the Spring and 'Summer Shows, the general opinion being that two shows a year were sufficient. It was decided to invite.Mr 11. Witchell, of Otaki, to deliver an address qh matters affecting horticulture at a date convenient to himself, and, if possible, to arrange other addresses by horticullural enthusiasts, to which the public will he invited. The I’resident brought up the question of increasing the membership. He said some effort should he made in this connection if the Society was to he put on a strong footing. He also expressed disappointment at the public attendance at the shows. The exhibitions were worthy of better patronage in this connection. Other members .spoke in a similar strain, and said that the local shows were the best on this coast, yet other exhibitions were crowded. It was decided to set up a sub-committee to look into this matter. A vote of thanks was accorded to all who had assisted at the Summer Show. " Other routine matters were discussed and the meeting -rose.
