Air Kilvvard Newman, Reform •■ didate for AlnnawaEu, \va-» member for Rangitikei in fTTis Purlin- ' ■* incut, and is a son of the late Edward Newman, fleet surgeon in the _ - Royal Navy, lie landed in New Zealand in the early eighties, and after a short experience on s«me of the large .sheep .stations, look up a bush farm in the Turn kina district. This he occupied until 1905, when he cut it up into small dairy holdings. He has always taken a keen interest in the Fanners' Union, and was for several years Parliament - ary agent: for the union. He was chairman' of the Rangitikei County Council for twenty years, and has also been a member of the Wanganui Education Board and other public bodies. He entered Parliament in 1908; as representative of the Alanawatu electorate.
Air A. C. Hi I Her, the Labour candidate for Alanawalii, has for many years taken a keen inleie-i in all public affairs at Shannon. Daring his residence hi Shannon he lias or- > i ganised the Labour Party, and has held (he position of pre-idem secretary of the Flaxworkers' Union and chairman of the Shannon Cash Trading Association. He is a councillor of the Shannon borough. •
Speaking at Carnarvon on Saturday night, Air Newman made reference to one of Air Hillier’s statements that he, Air Newman, was in favour of land aggregation, a si. lenient which was absolute!,. contrary to fact. The clause in the Washing Up Bill referred to by Air Hillier dealt with land that was an lion of land on Air Donald Fraser’s' property, by (he Rangitikei River, owing to the river changing its course. Air Fraser had been in occupation of the land for about (it) ■ years, and it would have been a great injustice to have refused his Estate possession of this piece that had ilium a dik'd to his land by the river changing its course. When the land (runsfor was applied for aider Air Eraser's death, the Government claimed payment for this piece of land added to Air Fraser’s properly, ami the clause iu question was to provide that the price shouldy be settled by arbitration. Air man characterised as a deliberate misrepresentation that because of this clause in the Washing Ip Bill, lie was in favour of reaggregatiou of land.
