The story per medium id! un American newspaper that on Deceinber 17th, l»y a certain association of planets in the lirmamont and with the collaboration of the sun, Mother Earth is to have an anxious time, lias caused no little alarm to many people in Wellington. The advent of gaseous vapours, earthquakes, tidal waves, and intensely cold weather has created a panic among some credulous people. In several cases a slate akin to nervous collapse is said to have resulted. Taking time bv the forelock more than one householder, has already removed valuable crockery and plate to the depths ol! the garden.
“That such notice should be taken of the preposterous sensationmungering of the Yankee Press is absurd,” observed a well-known Wellington citizen to a New Zealand Times reporter yesterday. “This feeling of panic will grow unless soraemthing is done to cheek it. I know for a fact that many people are genuinely alarmed. Surely the authorities should take some steps to contradict this absurd canard.” —-N.Z. Times.
