SCHOOL COMMITTEE.
The-ordinary monthly meeting of the local State School ..Committee , was held hist night. PrcWflt; Mc's- ' srs ivellow (chairman), WcMurray, . Claris, Horn blow, Parkin, Perreau, Alexander, P. Robinson, and the head teacher, Mr Furrie. Cones,i 7 r 1 1 ; pondencc was read from the Board'- 1 ' notifying the resignations of Miss Lawson-Brown and Mrs Ross (nee - Miss M. A. Collins), and that leave of absence had been granted Miss Hay in order to allow her ■■■to visit Tasmania on urgent family mailers. The Committee, on the motion of Mr Hornblow, decided to convey the Committee’s host wishes to Mrs Ross; also a loiter of sympathy to Miss Lawson-Brown, whose resignation was duo to her mother’s illness. A discussion took place re school picnic, which had been arranged to take place in Victoria Park on the Kith inst-. Owing to the date oCthe General Election. It was decided to'postpone the picnic and sports until February, when an attempt will be made to have an outing to the Gorge. A discussion took place re improvements to the school grounds, and to make the approach in keeping with the new building,. It was decided to ask Mr Banner to meet the Committee on the grounds and discuss the matter. It was reported that the Roll of Honour had been erected in the entrance of the new building ready for the opening ceremony. Mr Gabites, at the request of the head teacher, submitted a sketch of a suitable weather vane, consisting of an emblem of peace—dove bearing ail olive branch —emblematic of (ho signing of peace. Air Gabites. was accorded a vote of thanks, and it was decided to endeavour to have the vane made according to design. Mr Hornblow was authorised to move in (he matter of acquiring 'a larger playing area. The Chairman was authorised to approach the Borough Council re misapprehension of rebate on sanitary charges. The disappearance of the school bell was commented upon. Two members said they had heard the tinkling of a'bell after I lie lire. It was decided that enquiries be made for the missing bell. .Lengthy reports were submitted by the visitors and head teacher. The latter commented upon I lie improved attendance, and dealt with the new system of proficiency examinations, It) candidates having been granted proficiency passes on the year’s work,only the doubtful ones being submitted to the examination test. Resolved to thunk the' staff for the excellent work accomplished during (he year under (lie exacting condidlions. Resolved-- ■- to ask the Mayor and Mr Fraser (Board member) to olliciale at the prize-giving ceremony in the Town Hall on the afternoon of the Kith, and to invite parents to attend the ceremony. Mr Fame thanked (lie Committee for its appreciation of the staff’s efforts, and for the interest displayed in the welfare of the school. Other minor matters were discussed, and accounts passed for payment.
