FALLEN SOLDEERS’ MEMORIAL.
The following is this week’s contributions to the above fund: — ■ ■ „ £ .s. d.
' A total of £69 for the week. This is very encouraging, when it is considered that the circular appeals only reached a number of people on Tuesday last. At least £SOO is required, and it is confidently expected that there will be no difficulty in raising this sum. A meeting of the Committee was held last night, when it was decided not to raise any funds by means of entertainments, but to rely on each citizen to give a straight-out donation according to his or her means. It was hoped that every man, woman or child would' contribute something to the memorial as a tribute to the memory of the honoured dead. It was suggested that some considered that the memorial should have taken the form of swimming baths, memorial gates, or a band rotunda, and because these ideas were not adopted it would prejudice giving. Well, these matters were discussed at the public meeting, and were set aside in favour of a suitable monument to be erected in the Triangle Reserve, in Main Street. Such being the ease, differences of opinion should be buried, and whatever was to be given to the other objects should be put into the object in view. The vital thought is, we are giving something to perpetuate the memory of those bravo local and district men who died for us.
