SOLDIERS’ MEMORIAL.

OBELISK TO BE ERECTED

There was a fair attendance at the public meeting held on Tuesday evening, convened by the Mayor to consider the form which the proposed soldiers’- memorial is to lake. The Mayor said that several things had been mentioned as suitable memorials, including public baths, gates to the new park, an obelisk, bank rotunda, etc., and it was for the meeting to decide which was to be adopted. Personally he thought that an obelisk should he erected, and the balance, if any, of the money subscribed could be utilised for some further memorial. 'After discussion.it was decided, on the motion of the Mayor, that an endeavour be made to raise £I,OOO for the purpose of erecting war memorials.

It was decided to erect a suitable monument in the Triangle, to contain the names of all fallen heroes from this district, the cost of same not to exceed £SOO, and the disbursement of the balance subscribed to ba decided at a meeting of subscribers to bo held later. The following committee, with power add to their number, was set up to consider ways and means of raising the necessary money: Messrs J. Chrystall, J. K. Hornblow, M. E. Perreau, D. Christie, John Ross, H. C. Coffin, W. Raine, P. E. Jenks, T. Halliday, and P. S. Moorhouse,
