FINANCES OF DOMINION.

,SIR JAMES ALLEN’S COMMENTS NO EABLY HEDUCTTON OF TAXATION, 1 Interesting x’emarks upon the financial position of the Dominion were made by the Minister of Finance (Sir James Allen) when replying to a deputation at M ellington yesterday. The Supplementary Estimates, he said, had yet to come down, and had already mounted up to very much more than the balance available to meet them. It had apparently been hoped by the late Minis lei” of Finance that this year it would have been possible to reduce taxation that was pressing; heavily on some industries, but it had not been possible to do so; in fact, so far as he could judge, the possibilities of reducing taxation next year were fairly remote. In these circumstances it was the duty of the Government to ascertain what were the most urgent needs of the country when considering the Estimates.
