SUBSCRIPTIONS TOTAL £8,000,000. COMPULSION FOR THE , BALANCE. Information concerning the result of the £10,000,000 Victory Loan was sought in the House oLßepresentatives on Thursday by the Leader ol; the Opposition, The Minister of Finance (Sir -James Allen) .said lie was unable to give definite details at that stage, but in Hie evening he made a statement to the . House. TJu> public, he said, had subscribed £8,000,000, and there were still some amounts to come in. It would be necessary to use*the compulsory powers provided by the Act to secure the balance. He wished it to be understood (hat persons who had subscribed hall" the amount for which they were liable would not evade the powers of compulsion. Provision had been made to prevent hardship, however, and it could be taken that uo hardship would ho indicted. Those who were in a position to subscribe and had not done so would bo compelled to meet their liabilities.
