PRESBYTERIAN CHURCH.
•INDUCTION' AND WELCOME TO THE REV. MR. HALLIDAY.
At the local Presbyterian Church last evening the Rev. Thos. Ilalliday was inducted to the pastoral charge of the local Presbyterian Church. There was a fair attendance of members and adherents, and representatives of other demoninafions in attendance. The Rev. Alex. Doull, interim moderator of the charge, presided and inducted, the Rev. Mr Wheel don, of Shannon, preached a most eloquent sermon, the keynote of which was Christian unity, and the Rev. Mr McAra, owing to the unavoidable absence of the Rev. Mr Miller, addresod the minister and congregation. Both the sermon and addresses wore very inspiring, and were followed with the closest attention. The hymns were appropriate, and the singing was led by a full choir. Mrs Claris presided at the organ. After the induction service an adjournment was made to the schoolroom, where a welcome social was accorded to the Rev. Mr Holliday and Mrs Holliday. The stage was very’tastefully decorated with greenery and flowers, giving it the appearance of a sylvan bower. The Rev. Air Donll occupied the chair, and the guests, together with visiting ministers, occupied seats on-the After the singing of the National Anthem, the Chairman extended a welcome on behalf of the Wanganui Presbytery and congregation to the Rev. Mr Holliday and Airs Holliday. . He said the tilling of the vacancy was accomplished in record time, and congratulated Foxton upon having obtained the services of Air Halliday. He assured Air Halliday that ho would find the Foxton peoule hospitable and loyal, and felt sure that by (heir united efforts (ho church would continue to progress. The Rev. Mr AlcAra paid a very Haltering tribute to the Foxton folk, and assured Air Halliday that he was settling among some of the finest people he had met in the Dominion. Af.essrs Hornblow and Claris extended a welcome to the minister on behalf of the Session and Ala angers. The Mayor (Air John Chryslall) extended a civic welcome, and hoped, that Air Halliday’s work in (he community would be abundantly blessed. An apology for absence was read from the Rev. Father Forrestal, who extended a welcome to the new minister. The Rev. Mr Paine (Anglicanj during the course of his speech urged the congregation to co-operate with their minister and assist him 'by their prayers. The Rev. Mr Harding (MethodEl) and Captain Coffin (Salvation 'Army) also delivered -broil’ speeches of welcome. In rising to respond, the Rev. Mr Halliday was greeted-wilh a hearty round of applause. He (hanked all (he speaker*; for their kind expressions on behalf of Mrs Halliday aiul himself. He said he would not make any rash promises, as lie was a “canny Scot,"’ but would do his best in the work he was called upon to perform for the extension of God’s Kingdom. He felt deeply touched by the heartiness of the welcome. During the evening songs were contributed by Mrs Bullard, Miss Evans, and Mr Cronqnost. After the Doxology find been sung, supper was served by the ladies ol the congregation. An afternoon is to be held in the. Masonic Hall next Wednesday week, by the ladies, when an opportunity will he a Horded the public of meeting the new minister and Ins wife.
