AMONG THE SAVAGES.

JELLICOE’S HUMOUR. In bis speech at the Christchurch Savage Club korero on Saturday night, Lord Jellicoe picturesquely and quaintly described the experiences of H.M.S. New Zealand once she started on her world cruise. When they reached Australia, be said, (bey found that Die men who should carry provisions from one place to another would not work. The chiefs of the tribes seemed unable to make the men work, and they slated that they were waiting for the great talking man. (Laughter.) They heard he would arrive shortly, so they left. (Loud laughter.) Then they travelled many miles and reached a place called Wellington, which they said was the capital. (Laughter.) He had thought it was till he came, to Christchurch. (Laughter.) The day he arrived in Wellington the Ward tribe had a powwow. The next day ilie Massey tribe had a pow-wow. Things were peaceful when they left, but since then things had not been so peaceful. (Laughter.) They then came to Lyttelton, where the natives told .them that if they travelled over the hill they would behold the great city of Christchurch. (Laughter.) Some walked over, and some went through a hole in the hill, which smelled badly. (Laughter.) They saw many wondrous things, and beautiful maidens asked them to dance. (Laughter.) Many wonderful dances they saw. Some they had seen in their own country, and some of them they had not. (Laughter.) That day they saw wonderful sights. They visited a place where strange animals were running round very fast— -(laughter)—and some of the savages made money and some did not. (Laughter.) But the greatest sight was reserved for that evening when they were given a welcome for which they were very grateful. (Cheers.)
