COAL-BEARING AREAS.
COVERNMFA’A PURCHASE IN THE NORTH. 1,100 ACRES NEAR ITUNTLY. During the time the Hon, A\. D. S. (MacDonald was Minister of Mines negotiations for (ho.purchase of air area of coal-bearing land adjacent to the Pukerairo eolleries, near Jlunlly, were completed. The area comprises 890 acres of freehold and between 200 and 300 acres of leasehold, the former estimated to contain about 10,000,000 tons, and the latter about 5,000,000 lons, of coal. Air James, who has been in charge, of (he State Alines on the West, Coast, has been appointed General Afanager of Slate Colleries, and instructions have been issued to expedite the surveys in connection with both the new area at Pukemiro and the Nine Aide mine near Greymouth.
