GENERAL ELECTIONS.

POSITION OF LABOUR CANDIDATES. The Hon. J. T. Pan!, M.L.C., has announced his intent ion of .standing for (lie selection ballot to choose the Labour party eandidale for Dunedin South, and Mr A, Walker, ALP., is to stand for I lie selection ballot for the Labour party candidate for Dunedin North, his present seat. The announcement that Mr John A. Brown (of Alethvmi and Co.) has accepted the invitation of :ae Otago Labour Representation Committee to he a candidate for Dunedin West, against Air W. Dowuie Stewart, is causing quite a flutter (says a southern paper). Mr Brown, it should be. explained,at the outset, is a member of the New Zealand Party, and is therefore quite eligible to be accepted by the party. A Duncilbi pap"r, however, points out that it does not seem to have ocemred to any of the unions adiliaLed to thg political Labour party, and from which the Labour Representation Commhtee recently sought nominations of candidates, that Air Brown's name was one that should he taken into consideration by them, and adds: "Certainly not one of them nominated own. and the understanding upon which nominations were submitted by them - was .hat tin selection of candidates tor the various -mat-,, would be made from the list of their nominees. The Iheorv is that aililinled anions should he consulted by the Labour Representation Committee in the choice of candidates. This consultation is through the opportunity that is afforded to the unions to nominate candidates. The act ion of the Labour Representation Committee in inviting and accepting the candidature of it person whom not-one of the affiliated organisations nominated, involves a complete departure from the procedure which is supposed to govern the selection of candidates for the party.”
