INFECTIOUS DISEASES.

INFLUENZA NOTIFICATIONS,

• During the week ending 25th August, 32 eases of influenza were reported in the Wellington Public Health District, as compared with 23 for the previous week. Three of the cases were of the pneumonic type, one being in the Wairoa Hospital District, one in the Palmerston North Hospital District, and the other in the Hutt-Valley. Of the remainder, one was reported as a severe ease, the rest being classed as mild. The hospital districts from which the 32 eases were reported were as follow: —Wairoa 3, Hawkes Bay 1, Taranaki 1, Hawera 2, Wanganui 7, Palmerston North 2, Wellington 14, and Wairarapa 2. As the population of the Wellington Health District is about 400,000, the fact that 32 cases of influenza were reported in one week is not regarded with undue alarm. The influenza that is being nolilied is of a comparatively mild nature, but, nevertheless, the situation is being watched very closely.

Following are the numbers of other eases of infectious diseases notified to the District Health Officer during the iveek ending 25th August, the figures for-the previous week being given in parentheses: — Scarlet fever, 4 (4); diphtheria, 27 (29); enteric fever, 2 (2); pneumonia, 11 (13).
