THE GAS WORKS.
JULY WORKING. The amount of gas manufactured during the month of July Avas 523,000 ft., Avhich, Avith the amount in holder on July Ist, 10,000 ft., made a total of 530,000 ft. The amount sold to consumers for lighting was 213.000 ft.,'for cooking and heating 200.000 ft., and for poAver 48,200 ft., 0,100 ft. AA r as used in the street lamps, 22,000 ft. at the Avorks and manager’s house, and there Avas 16.000 ft. in the holder on August Ist, leaving 24,000 ft., representing just under 4| per cent, of the total output, unaccounted for. Fifty-one tons of coal (including 10 tons of Taupiri) Avas carbonised, yielding 10,240 ft. per ton.
MANAGER’S REPORT." The manager’s report, as folloAV«, was read and adopted at last night’s Council meeting:—The amount of gas manufactured for the month of July avus slightly less than the previous month. I am still getting a number of services choked. Wc had some trouble Avith the carbonising plant during the month, the back of retort in the six lied collapsing, hut avc eventually repaired same. I am preparing a plan for fixing two ucav retorts in the small spare arch, which I Avill submit next meeting, with the cost of same. This Avork will have lo he done soon, because all the retorts in the bed of four are getting past repair, in fact, one has been off for some lime. You will notice that Hie make per ton is down this monlh, on account of the poor class of coal wc have been getting, hut I suppose we must be thankful to get any coal at present, although it makes extra Avork in the retort 'house and purifiers.
