FOXTON BOROUGH COUNCIL.
MONTHLY MEETING. The monthly meeting of the Foxton Borough Council Avas held last night. Present: The Mayor (Mr J. Chrystall) and Crs. Bryant, Coley, Parkin, Thompson, Hannah, Pearson, and Rand. Apologies for absence Avere received from Crs. Walker and McMurray. CORRESPONDENCE.
Correspondence avus read as folloavs :
From Foxton School Committee, asking the Council to remit the charge made for school sanitation this year. The Mayor said that this application had only been received that afternoon, Avhereas the Council had made it a rule that all letters for consideration at the monthly meeting must be received not later than (he Friday preceding the meeting. He suggested that same he held over until next meeting for consideration. This course avus decided upon. From the Dorcas Society, applying for the free use of the Council Chambers for meetings on the afternoons of the first and third Fridavs in each month. —Granted.
From John Collins, applying for permission to cut doAvn a few dead trees in Victoria Park. —After discussion it was decided to notify Mr Collins that the borough employees had the first refusal of any dead I roes for fimvood.
From Foxton Harbour Board, notifying that the conference hoi ween representatives of the Board, Borough Council and ManaAvatu County Council lo discuss ways and means of acquiring the Round Bush as a scenic reserve Avould lie held on Saturday next, at 1.30 p.m. —The Coed’s delegates arc The Mayor and Crs. Coley and Walker. Cr, Thompson Avas appointed to act in Cr. Coley's place if ho avus unable to tie present.
From School /Auiiiuiltcc, asking Hie Council to erect Avarnings to motorists on streets adjacent to school. —Decided to erect four notices near Slate school, end Iwo at approaches to Convent school. Messrs W. Petrie and W. Nyc applied for permission to lake sand from ending in Russell Street for use on road leading lo their fibre paddocks. Permission granted, cutting to lie afterwards fascined and planted lo Hie satisfaction of Borough Overseer. OVERSEER’S REPORT. The road overseer (Air A. G. Huntley) reported as follows: — During the past month Hie road staff has been engaged straightening and cleaning water tables and repairing footpaths in Johnston, Thynne, Park, Robinson and Harbour Streets, patching holes in Sandon road and Lady’s Mile, weeding and cleaning lip Triangle, Alain SI root, and screening coke ash ai gasworks ready for tarring work when weather is suitable. We have put in a portion of Hie pipe culverl in front of motor garage, Clyde Street, but. could not obi ain enough cemcni to complete same. This will be done as soon as cement arrives. Our stock of metal in the yard is nearly exhausted, and we have been reduced to using clinkers from gas works on certain- portions of our roads. Giving to Hie railway curtailment, the Ira flic on the roads is increasingly heavy, especially in respect to motor cars and lorries. In respect to motor cars, their speed is terrific; I refer to (hose engaged in the through service, Naav Plymouth to Wellington. During Hie present month I propose the finishing of cleaning of water fables and repairing footpaths in remaining streets, and doing all Hmt is possible to keep the roads good till we get more metal. Would it be possible ,to get a supply from Hie Alanawatu County? In reference io Hie sugegstion of get ting metal from Hie Alanawatu County, the Mayor said he had approached Cr. Barber on Hie subject, and he had recommended, making application in Avriling to the Council.
Cr, Coley also considered it would lie advisable to try and get 100 yards of metal from Sanson.
Cr. Thompson said some of the si reels needed urgent repairs, and every effort should be made to get some met a!. It was decided to endeavour to get 100 yards from Hie Comity.
