OFFICIAL ENDING OF THE WAR.
IMPORTANT ANNOUNCEMENT.
The actual .date upon which the war is considered officially to have ended is of considerable interest to the commercial community and others who entered into contracts or legal agreements to conclude “at the termination, of the war.” This has been freely discussed in England, where such arrangements w r ere probably more general, as well as in Australia . (says the Melbourne Age). Thp.question was determined and the a.etual date defined in the federal - blouse of Representatives on 16th July. Mr Pigott (N.S.W.) had asked, whether the war ended on 28th June, when the Peace Treaty, was signed, or only on the ratification by the combatant nations of the signatures of their plenipotentiaries. The Acting Attorney-General replied that the Secretary of State for the Colonies had advised, as regarded the, termination of the war with Germany, that under the concluding article of the Peace Treaty the Treaty Avon! d come into force on the ratification by Germany and three of the principal Allied Powers, as regarded those Powers, and that for the determination of all periods of time as provided for in the Treaty the date of that ratification w’ould be the date of the Treaty coming into force. In all other respects the Treaty would enter into force for each Power at date of deposit of its ratification. The date of coming into force could not yet be slated. As regards Austria, it was not yet possible to state in what manner the termination would be fixed.
