RED SHIELD CLUB.
TO BE OPENED TO-MORROW.
To-morrow afternoon, at 2.30 o’clock, Commissioner Hodder, head of the Salvation Army in New Zealand, will open the Red Shield Club, in Main Street. This is the first club of its kind under the jurisdiction of the Army in New Zealand, and its progress will be watched with interest. The object of the Red Shield Club is to cater for the social, moral and intellectual welfare of the local youths. A monthly membership fee of Is is charged. One room is set apart for Returned Soldiers. Other rooms are provided for games, literary and musical pursuits. A committee of management, consisting of well-known citizens, will have the oversight of the chib. About £l5O is required to properly furnish the rooms, of which about £3O has already been subscribed. The public are invited to the opening ceremony, - when no doubt the Commissioner wall have something to say concerning the future policy of this and similar clubs.
The Army is out to provide a counter attraction to the street for our boys, and in this connection are entitled to the generous support of the local public.
