CHAMBER OF COMMERCE.
The monthly meeting of the Council of the ’ c ;1 Chamber of Commerce was lieu! in the Borough Council Chamber yesterday afternoon. There were present: Messrs Perreau (president), Cronquest, Christie, Barr, Hornblow, Bryant, and the secretary (Mr Moorhouse). The secretary reported that no reply had been received so far from the local postmaster re extension of telephone hours and substituting the single for the double ring on making connections, One member explained that the extension of hours could not be observed until the new connections were made, and this could not be done until a supply of telephones came to hand. Re fire prevention matters: It was explained that the Borough Council intended to deal with the Chamber’s letter on this subject at a later date.
A discussion took place on the increased charges made for commodities and alleged exploitation. The opinion w r as expressed that the only remedy was a change of Government. Mr Christie referred to the enormous profits which are being made by the manufacturers of woollen goods, as revealed in a recent strike ease against the employees. He urged that something should be done to protect the consumer from exploitation.
A vote of thanks was accorded Mr Perreau for canvassing for shares re the purchase of a steamer to work the port. Mr Bock was appointed auditor, subject to his consent, vice Mr Waters, who is leaving the district.
