THE RAILWAY CUT.
CONFERENCE HELD AT PALMERSTON. .
A representative attendance of members of local bodies and business men .met in conference at Palmerston N. yesterday to consider the railway cut, brought about by the coal shortage. The conference was convened by the Mayor of Palmerston N. (Mr J. A. Nash, M.P.). The following resolutions were carried :
“That in the opinion of this conference, the present railway facilities are most unsatisfactory; that a deputation Avail, on the aeling-Primo Minister, and Minister for Agriculture, Supplies and Railways, with a view to urging them to carry essentials on the railways, so as not to hamper industry and to preA’enl the closing op industries, thereby causing unemployment.”
“That in view of the serious loss caused to the country, and (be danger of an absolute paralysis to industry caused by Ihe present state of the railway service, this meeting considers further efforts should be made to economise the consumption, and specially recommends that the passenger service bo furl her restricted, and that national regulations be framed to restrict lighting and traimvav services.”
“That in view of the present state of the coal industry, as shown in the Coal Trade Commission's report, this meeting considers that urgent Government action must be taken to improve housing and other conditions at the mines. . “In view of the threatened industrial paralysis due to the coal shortage, the Minister of Munitions be asked to make it public declaration as to what steps are being taken to relieve the position.”
“That the Government, take immediate steps to snag the Mokau River to permit the large deposit of coal being taken out to supply ports between New Plymouth and Foxton.”
The following deputation was appointed to interview the authorities at Wellington on Wednesday next, at 2 p.m.;—The Mayor and members of boroughs, chairman and members of all county councils in Palracrstofi North and adjacent towns and districts; Messrs R. T. Bell and H. Seifert, Flaxmillers’ Association; Mr C. N. Clausen, coal merchants; Palmerston N. Chamber of Commerce; Messrs L. H. Collinson, J. M. Johnston, M. A. Eliott and R. S. Abraham.
