MILITARY SERVICE ACT.
HOW IT WORKED IN NEW ZEALAND. A TOTAL OF 11,343 EXEMPTIONS. Statistics now compiled show that during the operation of the Military Service Act in New Zealand the appeals of 11,343 reservists were adjourned sine die by the Military Service Boards. These reservists, in oilier words, were exempted (unless cause was otherwise shown) as being essentials or for reasons of undue hardship, etc. Of the total 11,343 boards adjourned 149 appeals sine die by reason of the appellants being the only surviving sons of parents who had already lost one son or more during the war. The remaining 11,194 men may he classified as follows: —Dairy farmers and workers, 497; farmers other than dairy farmers, 2,G3G; farm labourers (including shearers, slaughtermen, and shepherds), 611; professional (including accountants, secretaries, business managers, engineers,, medical practitioners, dentists), 469; members of the Public Service (including many railway men), 810; clergymen, divinity students, lay brothers, etc., 303; shipping workers (including marine engineers, seamen, firemen), 1,562; skilled labour (including all coal and gold miners, all those engaged m fishing industry, blacksmiths, boilermakers, t iron-moulders, metal workers, bootmakers, tailors, contractors, engine drivers, flour-mill-ers, mechanics, electricians), 2,299; transport workers (other than those engaged in shipping), 1,621; miscellaneous (aliens, Asiatics, unskilled labourers, etc.), 386. The exempted men in the classified occupations comprised 5,807 men of the First Division and 5,387 members of the Second Division. The married men were divided as follows: Class A (without children), 1,144; Class B (one child), 1,9.15; Class C (two children), 2,328. The total number of appeals dealt with by (lie Military Service Boards was 32.445. Of these appeals 11,343 were adjourned sine die, 16,872 wore dismissed, 2,461 were allowed, and 1,769 Avcre not determined.
