SESSION POSSIBILITIES.
Jt is now regarded as reasonably certain that the leaders of the Government will return to New Zealand some lime next month, and that Parliament will assemble towards Iho middle of August -(reports the Wellington correspondent of the Wanganui Chronicle 1 ). This is aboul the latest date to which the opening of the session can be postponed in view of the necessity for granting supply. The loaders will have an interval in which to look round and renew their acquaintance with local political affairs after their extended absence. On what they learn in that interval will depend the duration of the session. The Liberal Party has decided to face the general election as a separate body, (hat is to say, (he parly does not contemplate (he breaking up of the compact before the election. There is a hint in the latest statement by Sir James Allen, however, of a re-arrangement of parlies before that lime. Sir James Allen’s statement concluded thus; “On the return of the loaders to New Zealand, should it then he decided to end the compact, a progressive programme, consistent with the requirements of the country and its position as an important part of the Empire, will he issued.” In some quarters this is being interpreted as as indication that, if the Liberals wish to break away, (bey must do so before the session, and their Ministers will then have no opportunity of putting before the country the legislative measures Avhieh some of them have been preparing. Nor, for that matter, could much Reform legislation be passed. It would simply be a short session devoted to supply and necessary financial measures. This, and an early dissolution, is what labour has been hoping and preparing for with all the organisation at its command.
