FIRE IN WELLINGTON.
Wellington, June 4,
A tire in Prouse’s buildings, Taranaki Street, this morning did considerable damage, the ground lloor occupied by Dwan Bros., suffering Ihe most.
The second Jloor was occupied by the Salvation Army’s clothing department, in which damage to tlie extent of £4,500 was suffered. The contents of this floor were insured for £2,900.
The Defence Department’s si ores on the top floor were slightly damaged. The building - was insured for' £B,OOO. OUTBREAK AT OPOTIKI. Opotiki, June I. A lire started in the heart of the town this morning. Shops owned by Mr J. C. Arthur and occupied by Mr IT. E. Bailie (bootmaker) and Mr J. Steptoe (saddler), and •; building owned and occupied by Mr H. Larmer (tobacconist) were completely destroyed. The insurances total £1,050. All the occupiers are heavy losers. The fire brigade was promptly on the scene, and prevented (he spread of the lire to the adjoining buildings. A large plate-glass window in a shop on the opposite side of the street, owned by Mr W. Oakes, was shattered, a distinct bullet hole remaining in a portion. The heat from the lire was not considered sufficient to break the window. The police are investigating the matter.
