DARING-ROBBERY.

LARGE SUM STOLEN FROM MILTON POST OFFICE. Dunedin, May 1. A daring robbery took place at Milton on Wednesday night. FroiK what can be gathered the postmaster, Mr M’Guire, a very old servant of the Department, retired to bed at about 11 o’clock, leaving thg office keys in the hip pocket of his trousers, which were hung in a wardrobe. Some time on Thursday morning Air M’Guire heard a noise in the bedroom, but after listening for some time and hearing nothing more he concluded that the noise was caused by the springs of .the bed in the adjoining room, occupied by his daughter. At 7 o’clock a boy front the office informed Air M’Guire that the office safe door was standing, open. Investigation showed that,all the notes in the safe had been stolon, amounting in all to over £SOO. It is understood there were six £SO and several £lO notes. The office has a record of the numbers of tho £SO notes, and also of most,of the £lO notes. ARREST OF ALLEGED THIEF. Oamaru, Alay 2. The alleged perpetrator of the hank robbery at Alilton on April 30th was arrested here to-day by Constable Palmer. The accused, who is mimed Victor Keen, is a horse-trainer at Alilton. The news of the robbery was received here at !) a.m., and an arrest made at noon. One £lO note As cashed at the railway station -yesterday, and another attempt at negotiation to-day was inerccpted by Constable Palmer, who made the j arrest before the note reached the | bank. The note already had passed I through three hands. The constable lias recovered £396 of tho ! missing money. j
