THE MAYORALTY.

DEPUTATION TO DR. MANDL,

This morning a deputation numbering 24, and thoroughly representative of the whole community, waited on Dr. Mandl with the request that he should allow himself to be nominated for the position of Mayor at the forthcoming municipal election.

Mr Hornblow, in putting the request of the deputation before Dr, Mandl, said that it was a genera! desire that he should allow himself to be nominated. They knew that he had the welfare of the town and its people at heart, and felt that he was the right man for the position. If he would consent to nomination all present would do all in their power to assist his election. Mr W. Nye endorsed the remarks of the previous speaker. Dr. Mandl had always taken a keen interest in all matters that had for their object the progress of the town, and if he would accept nomination they knew that he would fill the position well, Mr F. D. Whibley said the deputation had been hurriedly got together, and a number of people who would have liked to join with them had been pi-evented from doing so on account- of the short notice. The desire that Dr. Mandl should accept nomination was general throughout the community, and if time had permitted the circulation of a petition a very large number of signatures could have been obtained. Mr Christie also endorsed the remarks of the previous speakers. Dr. Mandl, in reply, said that he looked upon it as a great honour to be approached by such a large ami representative gathering with a request (hat he should allow himself to he nominated for the highest' position in the power of the electors of the borough to bestow. He recognised that the office of Mayor called for a good deal of one’s time, and that, like all public positions, the occupier had to put up with a certain amount of criticism and pinpricks. It was expected of a Mayor to give a lead in all matters that had for (heir object the progress and prosperity of the town, and as lie always had had the welfare of the town at heart he would be pleased to do what lie could at any lime to assist its progress, dust at the moment he did not feel able to give an immediate answer to (he request of (he deputation, hut if (hey would give him a little time he would give (he matter consideration. He appreciated very much (lie honour they had done him in waiting on him with the request, which lie nimbi talk over with Mrs Mandl and give his reply within the next seven or eight days. , Mr Hornblow, on behalf of Hie deputation, thanked Dr. Mandl, and expressed the hope (hat his reply would he in the affirmative. They recognised that Ids profession was such that he was liable to be called away at all limes, hut any inconvenience in this connection could be got over to a certain extent by the appointment of a deputy-Mayor, as was done in most boroughs, who would take the place of the Mayor in his absence.
