SCHOOL COMMITTEE.

The ordinary meeting of the above was held last night. Present: Messrs Hornblow (chairman)., Rev. X H. Brcdin, Baildon, Claris, Martin, Perreau and Woods. An apology for absence was received from Mr Signal. Correspondence was. read and dealt with as follows: —

From the Education Board, submitting application from Miss 0. M. Ray to permanent position of second assistant, and enclosing qualifications. —Appointment endorsed. From same, re school holidays and closing school on Thursday next. —Received. From Mr Hodge, Board architect, re purchase of windmill to replace one destroyed by fire at a cost of £9 10s, and offering to erect same without further cost to the Committee. Offer accepted, and the Chairman’s action in connection with same endorsed. From A. J. Kcllow, asking that his letter of resignation be published. —Received. From Education Board, stating that the Hoard has no objection to arrangements being made for laying of a foundation stone in connection with new sellout building, and an invitation being set to the Minister of Education. The Board disapproves, however, of the practice of placing names on foundation stones, and cannot see its way to grant permission to place any names on the stone the Committee proposes to provide.—Left to the incoming committee to deal with. From (he Board re account for repairs to building used as a temporai'.v class-room, and pointing out that if the work was of such an urgent nature, the member of the Board residing- in Foxton should have been consulted, and asking why this was not done. —Resolved to inform the Board that the subcommittee appointed to deal with the matter overlooked this fact. The Committee was notified (ha! Miss Mary Collins had been temporarily appointed to the staff as seventh assistant teacher. A communication was received from the Board to the effect that the i Town Hall had been secured for the purpose of householders’ meeting, on the 29th inst. The Chairman said he had endeavoured to secure the hall for Monday, 28th inst., but the lessee would not grant it for that date, but the supper-room was available for the purpose. Mr Fraser bad obtained (he hall in anticipation of a targe meeting, and the Foxton School Committee election would, therefore, be held a day later. Correspondence was read from the Manawatu School Committees’ Association covering remits jo be P submitted to the conference of eominillees and householders meeting. The head teacher reported (hat the average attendance for the March quarter was 3(i(i out of an average roll number of 380. 'Mention was made of (he high level of attendance maintained in (he preparatory department, which indicated a ■'•i healthy and happy school life, despite the unpleasant conditions of work which teachers and children arc contending against.
