THE NIAGARA CASES

PASSENGERS AND CREW LANDED,

The Minister for Public Health (Hon. G. W. Russell) stated yesterday that the: whole of the New Zealand passengers on the vessel had been taken off of the ship yesterday, and wore now in quarantine on Molnihi Island. Instructions had also been given that all the Australian passengers on board were to be removed to the island. The Defence Department, under Colonel Porter, had made adequate provision in the way of tents and all necessary equipment for the accommodation of passengers on the island. In addition to (he passengers, as many of the crew as could be spared from the ship would also be taken ashore, in order (hat the segregation of the infected passengers might go on without affecting the position of the ship, the object of the Government being to allow the Niagara to proceed on her voy- ' age as rapidly as possible. All the methods adopted in regard to quarantine were dhected to that end. On Sunday 140 passengers were landed on the island from Unship. Of these, 70 were installed in buildings and the remainder in tents. There had also been put on shore 15 members of the crew, mostly stewards.

“I understand,” said IXTr Russell, <l (hat two mild oases have shown themselves 10-day, hul there arc no serious developments, so Jar as I am informed, up lo the present.” Everything possible is being done to guard the idly of Auckland against intention, and to bring about the recovery lo health of the-infected passengers, in order that the ship may be got away as early as possible.

Dr. Hughes, (he District Health Officer, Auckland, who relumed on Friday to the northern city, has been laid up with illness, and the Chief Health Office)' (Dr. Valintiue) proceeded to Auckland. CASES TOTAL FORTY-TWO. Auckland. April (i. Influenza on the Niagara has been rapidly increasing, and nine more cases were landed yesterday. To-day four more were taken ashore, making thirty-nine cases in all.-Major Petit slates that the condition of the patients is satisfactory. It is understood that passengers are being landed from the'Niagara this afternoon. They will be quarantined at the quarantine station. Auckhmd, Yesterday, Three more eases of inlluenza have been landed from the Niagara to-day, making a total of 12. The latest patients are one saloon, and one steerage passenger, and one o[ the crew. AH the eases are of mild type. All (he New Zealand passengers have been landed on the island. AUSTRALIAN DEATH ROLL. Sydney, Yest erday. There were thirty-one deaths from influenza during Ihe week-end, making a total of 232 to date. Melbourne, Yesterday. Nine deaths from influenza oeeurred during the week-end, making tlte total to date 765.
