THE HEMP INDUSTRY.
CLOSING OF THE FLAXMILLS
“Pro Bono Publico” Avrites in reply to J. HenshaAv, in the Palmerston Standard, re the above: — ... . ’ . . >
“it. is evident that the correspondent Avho Avrotc the above question in your issue of the 10th is looking for something that he does not Avish to find when he asks (he reason Avhy the flax mills are being closed. If he Avere to study the present market value for this commodity and the high Avages ruling to produce the finished article, he Avould probably find a solution of his problem. Surely he Avill not deny any employer of labour the right reserved to himself as to Avhether he Avill continue his business or not. When he mentions ‘dislocation’ he evidently does not know that this terra can be laid at the doorstep of labour in very many instances to such an extent as to remind me of an old saying, 'The pot calling the kettle black.’ When he talks about a new spirit, lie must first ‘pluck the beam from his own eye’ and view all things in a more tolerant spirit.”
