NOXIOUS WEEDS NUISANCE.
The New Zealand Flaxmillcrs’ Association wrote to the Horowhcnua County Council on Saturday requesting that goat’s rue lie declared a noxious weed, as it was likely to do much damage in (lax swamps. Cr Whyte produced a sample of the weed for inspection of the Council. Cr Law said to-day there were hundreds of acres of the weed growing profusely about the Mariawain Gorge, and it was becoming a, great nuisance. The seed was evidently brought down by the river. Cr Ryder said that it grew luxuriantly on river flats and shingle ground, and the danger was that h, was distributed by floods. Cr. .Darkness referred ,to the spread of the oxeye daisies from the Stale farm to the adjoining settlements. It was a shame that this sort of thing was not put it stop* to.
Cr, Cat ley said the noxious weeds inspectors were not paying sufficient attention to their duties.
The Chairman said the Department had not prosecuted during the war. That no doubt explained why nothing was being done. Cr. Harkness asked what steps (ho settlers should take about the spread of oxeye daisies from the State Farm. 'The Chairman said the settlers concerned should petition" the Department and if they did not give satisfaction put the matt ex* in the hands of the member of Parliament for the district.
(T. Ryder said ragwort Avas liecoming as great a nuisance, and the people should tie informed what a pest it Avontd become if not dealt Avirh. A motion declaring goat’s rue a noxious Aveed Avas carried.
