BRAVERY REWARDED.
AWARD TO PALMERSTON
CONSTABLE
Af Tuesday night’s meeting of the Palmerston Borough Council, the Mayor, on behalf of the Royal TTnmane Society, presented Constable Ernest Francis Jones with the Society's diploma for having saved the lives of two lads, Robert Henry liaske and Charles Jones.
In making (lie presentation, the Mayor referred (o (lie plueky eonduet of the officer. He said that the two boys were being 1 swept down the Manawatu River, and would undoubtedly have been drowned but for (he pi'onipt action of Constable Jones. He was fifteen yards away when he heard the cries for help, and at once rushed to the scene and plunged into the swift stream. He succeeded in getting hold of both (he lads, and brought them safely to laud. Had not the rescuer been a very strong and expert swimmer doubtless a fatal accident would have occurred. He felt sure that all would join with him in expressing (heir gratification that the constable’s gallant conduct had been suitably recognised. The town also should feel proud of possessing a citizen who was willing (o risk his life at the call of duty. The constable was loudly applauded on receiving the presentation. —Standard.
