George Smith, hero of the defence of liorke’s Drift, [Mr Smith died at Preston, Lancashire, early in December, In Do Xeuville’s famous picture, “Porke’s Drift,” the most conspicuous figure is Mr Smith, prominent hy his great heard and haversaek bulging with ritlo cartridges, which he is handing out to the men id.’ (he 24(h (South "Wales Borderers) Regiment, who are lining the barricade built of mealie hags and biscuit boxes. Mr Smith was a missionary who was attached to the forces as aetingehaplaiu. When he was first asked if he would lake a rifle and help in the defence, he replied Urn I it was against his conscience to kill, but he would he. very pleased if he could help by Inking food, water, and cartridges round, as long as they might be required, lie did so with the greatest desregard for Ids own safety. Ho was recommended for (he V.C., but did not receive it owing to some technicality. The soldiers were intensely enthusiastic over the conduct of Mr Smith.]
