CROCIUET.

The first match for the gold and silver badges presented by Mr James Stewart was played on the local lawn yesterday afternoon. The names of all the players on (he ground at three o'clock were placed in a hat, and the first two pairs drawn out we he to play off to decide the first holders. Those drawn were .Mrs Ball and Mrs Evans and Mrs Parkes and Mrs Whibley. It was decided to play (his game without handicaps, but to handicap the players for all future matches. The pairs drawn yesterday afternoon proved to be very evenly matched, and a most exciting game resulted, Hesdames Ball and Evans eventually winning a very closely contested match, and are the first holders of the trophies. The following arc Urn handicaps for all future games: —Mesdames Perreau, Woods and Evans scr., Mrs Whibley and Mrs Bryant 1 hoop, Mrs Parkes 2 hoops, Mrs Healey and Mrs Ball 3 hoops, Mrs Keay, Mrs Barr and Mrs Pearson 5 hoops. The Conditions under which the trophies'are to be played for are that any two players can challenge the holders to play at any time, and provided there is nothing to prevent the holders being on the ground on the day they must play or forfeit. If the holders are on the ground and two others put in a challenge for a match to be played that day the holders must accept the challenge.
