A NOBLE BUILDING.

PROPOSED ANGLICAN CATHEDRAL.

It was decided some time ago, owing lo the more pressing claims of war enterprises, to suspend the campaign to raise funds lo build an Anglican Cathedral in Wellington. At that time a sum of over £30,000 had been promised, indicating thatthe project, had the support of a great many people. Now that the war is over, the campaign is being proceeded with. Before the work of building can be begun a sum of £150,000 is desired in cash and promises, When that financial goal is reached, the workmen will begin to erect the great cathedral which is to be Built by the free-will offerings of a grateful people, as a memorial lo New Zealand soldier.- who fell in the war, and a thank offering for the coming of peace and for the safe return of those whom death passed by on the battlefield. The plans of the cathedral have been prepared by Mr Frank Reck, who was for several years the chief assistant of Sir Aston Webb, (be eminent English architect. The Cathedral is to be built in .ferroconcrete for stability, but will be embellished inside and out with si ones, including New Zealand marble and grande. Judging from the plans and elevations, the cathedral will be an exceedingly beautiful building. Jl will stand on the present site of Si. Mark’s Church, overlooking the Basin Reserve, and this slightly elevated site will enable (he lofty and symmetrical linos of the building to be seen wiih the best effect. At present the capital city of Neve Zealand lias feu- modern buildings among its churches,

much less a cathedral. Christchurch has had a cathedral for many years, so has Napier. Money has been bequeathed.as a nucleus to build one in Nelson; Dunedin already has begun to build her cathedral. Yet the capital city Ims none. Confidence is felt that the people will respond worthily lo the appeal. Subscriptions may be made hi the form of Government Stock or AYav Bonds; ami promised sums, if so desired, may be made in payments, extending over periods up lo five years. The first step is to communicate with I lie bon. organising secretary, Rev. C. F. Askew, St. Mark's A 7 icarage, AVelliugtou.
