BY-ELECTIONS

The position in regard to the byelections for Wellington South and Palmerston North is governed by section 99, sub-section l 4, of the Legislature Act, which says; “Where a vacancy exists at the commencement of any session, and no writ has been issued to supply the same, or if a vacancy occurs during a session, the Speaker shall forthwith, upon being ordered to do so by the House, issue his warrant to the Clei'k of the Writs directing him to issue a writ to supply the vacancy.” The matter, therefore, rests in the hands of the Speaker and the House.
