DEFENCE EXPENDITURE.
Mr Witty asked in the House how long highly-paid officers of the Defence Department would be retained. He asserted that there was “wilful and wailton waste” throughout the Dominion. Would the Defence Department go on with “Allen’s Folly,” the blocking of Whitmore Street with a new building? Sir James Allen replied that the New Zealand officers were probably (he lowest paid in the world, and Parliament would no doubt be asked shortly lo make provision for an increase. Many officers had given up lucrative civil Occupations to serve their country. The new building referred lo was being erected for reasons of elliciency and economy, and its cost would be saved in five or six years. Records and Ray Departments would require to go on for some time, and afterwards the building would be.very useful to the public service.
