AMERICA’S TRIBUTE TO IRELAND.

THE “TIMES’” ADMISSION. IN PATRIOTISM “THE IRISH HAVE THE'PALM.” America has always made cordial acknowledgment of Ireland’s services to the cause of the great Republic; and the Irish people all the world over have never ceased to proclaim their gratitude to America which, for upwards of a century, Inis been the generous guardian and saviour of their race. It is for this reason that (he Irish people have been alarmed and. grieved by (In: sinister campaign to promote ill-feeling between (he two countries; n diabolical scheme on which immense sums, great influence and cunning organisation have boon lavishly expended. But happily the motives of this contemptible conspiracy have been exposed, and in such an unsympathetic quarter as the London Times of August Ist we find their Wash-, ington correspondent voicing America’s tribute to Ireland in the following striking comment ; “The Federal education authorities are studying alien races with a view to their scientific assimilation by America. ... It is significant of the cultural possibilities of American institutions, that of all races in their midst the Irish have perhaps the palm for effective patriotism.” In another column of (he same issue (he Washington correspondent says : “The Irish in America, except for a few extremists, arc playing their part in the war with splendid energy. It is felt that failure to settle the status of their motherland would be a poor return for (heir energy in the common cause, and might introduce feelings among them calculated to embarrass the President in the peace negotiations. There is also, despite irritation with the Irish attitude towards conscription, ... a strong feeling among all Americans that justice, expediency and consistency, all demand a settlement of the Home Rule controversy.”—The Catholic Press.
