PEACE CELEBRATIONS.

There was iv well-attended and representalive gathering present at the meeting called hy the Mayor on Thursday. evening, in the Council Chamber, to discuss what form local peace celebrations would take. The Mayor expressed pleasure in seeing such a good attendance present at such short notice and despite the inclement weather. He stated that the object of the meeting was to discuss and formulate a programme to fittingly celebrate the acceptance of the Allies’ terms for an armistice by Germany. The final peace celebrations would be a separate function. He then read a programme which had been adopted by Levin. Mr Kellow said the Government would set aside a special day when peace was declared. Dr. Mandl made a special plea on behalf of the children to participate in the celebrations, particularly when peace was declared. The following committee was then appointed: The Mayor and Messrs Rev. Raine, Hornblow, Harvey, Hollow, Aitcheson, Fume and Golder. It was resolved that should the news of the acceptance of an armistice hy Germany he received in the morning, that hells be rung at 12 noon, and that the procession and ceremony take place at 2 p.m. All shops and businesses to (dose at noon. If the news arrives in the afternoon, bells to he immediately rung and businesses (dosed, and that the procession and ceremony lake place at S p.m. - A vole of thanks to the Mayor was carried, and (lie committee set up then met to arrange details. It was decided to erect a platform over the footpath in Main Street, between Walker and Furrie’s shop and Dr. Mandl’s, to accommodate the Band and others taking part. Mr Aitcheson was appointed marshal, and to arrange processions. The order of the procession will be: — Band, Returned Soldiers, Territorials and Cadets, Rille Club, Borough Council, School Children, Friendly Societies, Citizens, Decorated Cars, Other Vehicles, The procession to form up at the. Triangle and march the length of Main Street, and return to the place of assembly. Resolved to ask parents to supply children with small flags, and that bunting he flown wherever possible on shops, etc. The Mayor to arrange for speakers, and that vocal and instrumental items he given. The whole programme to he again repeated in the evening, and if the weather is wet, in the Town Hall. A further meeting will he held to discuss a programme for general Feaee Day.
