BIG CONFLAGRATION IN WELLINGTON.
Wellington, Nov. 5. A fire broke out in the limber yards in Taranaki Street to-night, and destroyed a great quantity of building material. It is believed to have started in the Wellington Cooperage and Box Company’s yard. The timber was chiefly white pine. There was destroyed also a big two-storey iron factory full of machinery. A. two-storey brick factory occupied by the same company was completely gutted. Millar's West Australian Hardwoods Company lost practically all their slock of timber, also a, workshop, but the office was saved. The stock of timber in C. Slynmn’s yard and a large rack of mouldings were completely destroyed. A great feature of the fire was the saving of Jessie Street from destruction. This narrow thoroughfare was lined on each side with two-storey wooden houses. The brigade made a splendid light, and after two hours’ hard work the danger jo Jessie Street was averted. AT)out thirty or forty houses meanwhile had been stripped of furniture, and the Mayor placed the Town Hall at the service of those whose homes had been dismantled. No estimate can be given at present of the losses, but they must amount to many thousands. The insurances were as follow; Wellington Co-operative Box Co., Ltd., £BOSO on stock and plant; Millar's Hardwood Co., £9,000 on stock, buildings and plant : Slyman’s stock, £OOO. > Portion of Millar’s stock of timber was saved.
