ALLEGED FALSE PRETENCES.
EXTRAORDINARY STORY,
Dunedin, Oct. 18,
At the Police Court to-day, Arthur Patrick .McGuire was charged that “between May, 1917, and August, 1918, at Christchurch, ho obtained from William John Cnpples £194 by means of false pretences, to Avit, that lie was endeavouring to obtain the release of Miss Lines from a convent.
Chief-Detective Bishop said the facts as related by the complainant Avere extraordinary. He lived at Christchurch, and Avbile Avorking at the convent became acquainted Avitli a young Avoman there, and then conceived Ihe desire‘of obtaining her release. He got to know accused, and mentioned the matter lo him. Accused told him that he could obtain her release if the money were put up, and in order to do so, said lie Avould get lavo detectives from Wellington, These alleged detectives were duly introduced to complainant, and from lime to tune sums of money were obtained from him.
